Spain and Greece optimistic they can welcome British tourists this summer

Beach holidays to the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Valencia and many of the Greek islands could still be on the cards this summer.

Spain and Greece are not currently on the ‘ green list ‘ of countries with quarantine-free travel, but both countries are confident they can welcome Brits to at least a few top destinations this summer.

The two countries are, for now at least, on the ‘amber list’ which requires 10 days of quarantine at home on arrival back in England.

Government ministers from both countries put forward the case on Wednesday morning that there are many regions where infection numbers are low enough to be on the ‘green list’.

These could include places like Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Valencia and many of the Greek islands.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on May 12, Spain’s Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said: “It’s looking good for Britons to spend their holidays in Spain this summer.

“We are having a good discussion with the UK authorities to convince them that there are many regions in Spain – Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Valencia – where the numbers are equivalent to those in the UK today.

“If the UK looks with a regional lens they will discover there are many safe places in Spain already today to travel to.”

She added: “Let me tell you that Spain loves British people so we’re very much looking forward to welcoming them back in our country.”

Greece is also trying to convince the UK government that the country is a safe destination.

On Good Morning Britain today, the Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis asserted: “Greece is a very very safe destination.

“We have been safer than most countries all throughout this pandemic and we are continuing in the same vein.”

Echoing the Spanish minister, he added: “Many of our islands are on the same level as Portugal – so it doesn’t make sense that the whole of Greece is in the amber list.”

The only 12 countries currently on the ‘green list’ are Australia, Brunei, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Iceland, Israel and Jerusalem, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
