Bob Holiday offers historic perspective of Coach K’s accomplishments

Former WRAL sports anchor Bob Holiday stopped through to offer some perspective on Coach K’s legacy.

CHAPTER. >> WE HAVE ALL WATCHED ALL OF THAT INVOLVED OVER THE YEARS. WHAT A TIME FOR OUR LOCAL SPORTS LANDSCAPE. THIS IS JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER ROY WILLIAMS RETIRED AT UNC. >> THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG HIT FOR THE ACC. BOB, YOU HAVE BEEN COVERING MIKE KRZYZEWSKI FOR LONG TIME. WE KNEW THIS NEWS WAS COMING, BUT IT STILL SEEMS SURREAL. I WANT TO GET YOUR REACTION TO THE TIMING OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT AND ALSO TO HIS REPLACEMENT? >> WHEN HIS GRANDSON JOINED THE PROGRAM, WE ALL SAID THAT HE WOULD SEE HIM THROUGH HIS GRADUATION. HE HAS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, SO THAT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN. I WOULD’VE THOUGHT HE WOULD COACH A COUPLE MORE YEARS. CLEARLY, 74, HE’S DONE EVERYTHING THERE IS TO DO A BASKETBALL. I THINK COACHES ARE AFFECTED BY THE TRANS PORTAL CHANGES, THAT NAME IMAGE AND LIKENESS. IT IS WILD WORLD OUT THERE. I WAS SURPRISED BUT NOT SHOCKED, PUT IT THAT WAY. >> PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SPECULATING ABOUT WHO WOULD SUCCEED HIM FOR YEARS. FIRST IT WAS JOHNNY DAWKINS AND THEN CAPEL. JOHN IS SITTING NEXT TO THE HEADMAN, HE IS A WELL-ROUNDED COACH. I THINK HE IS A PERFECT PERSON. >> WE COVERED HIM AS A PLAYER. BIG PICTURE, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE RIVALRY IN THE FUTURE ON TOBACCO ROAD? >> I GO BACK TO THE EARLY DAYS. EXPECTATIONS WERE HIGH WHEN HE TOOK THE JOB. THE IRON DUKES WANTED HIM FIRED. WHEN THE IRON DUKES BUT THE PRESSURE TO FIRE HIM, HE PUT ON THE BRAKES. LUCKILY, THE DAVID HENDERSON, THEY CHANGED THE TRAJECTORY OF A DUKE BASKETBALL. THEY WENT TO THE FINAL FULL AND PLAYED FOR THE NATIONAL CHAIR BISHOP IN 1986. AFTER THAT, DEBORAH, THIS IS BEFORE YOU JOINED US. BUT I KNOW YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS. DUKE WENT TO THE FINAL FOUR FOR FIVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS, SIX YEARS AND SEVEN. NOTE PROGRAM HAD DONE THAT SAYS UCLA. DUKE WON BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS. NO ONE HAD DONE THAT SINCE UCLA. MEANWHILE, OF COURSE, ALL OF THE CAROLINA — DUKE GAMES WERE EPIC. WHEN YOU’RE THAT DUKE DIDN’T GO TO THE TOURNAMENT AFTER 1986 — 1984, AND TO THIS GREAT YEAR, THAT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST DUKE, CAROLINA GAMES EVER. THE ROBBERY HAS BEEN EPIC. I HAVE WATCHED IT GO BACK AND FORTH. HOW LONG CAN THIS GO ON? PART OF ME HELPS AS LONG AS — SADLY, IT IS NOT TO BE. THE RIVALRY WILL GO ON BUT IT WILL BE DIFFERENT. >> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS MORE IMPRESSIVE, THE GREAT PLAYERS THAT COME TO THE PROGRAM OF THE GREAT PLAYERS THAT WENT ON TO BECOME COACHES HIMSELF AFTER WORKING WITH AND FOR MIKE KRZYZEWSKI. >> I THINK BOTH. MIKE KRZYZEWSKI HAS WRITTEN BOOKS ON LEADERSHIP. ALL CONCERN IS BACKGROUND AT WEST POINT. HIS ABILITY TO READ MEN TRANSLATED WITH HIS PLAYERS. THAT ENABLED THEM TO BECOME NOT ONLY GREAT PLAYERS BUT COACHES AND LEADERS AS WELL. >> SUCH A LEADER ON THE BASKETBALL COURT AND CERTAINLY OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AS WELL. HE HAS MADE SUCH AN IMPACT. BOB, WE THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TIME AND INSIGHT TONIGHT. STILL GLAD YOU WERE HERE ALL ALL THESE YEARS LATER — I CALLED YOU A HUMAN ENCYCLOPEDIA EARLIER. WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS, WE WANT TO GO TO YOU. >> REAL QUICKLY, 2001. WE HAD ALL WRITTEN DUKE OFF. MIKE KRZYZEWSKI REINVENTED HIS TEAM AND WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. INCREDIBLE LEADERSHIP. >> I WAS COVERING THAT FINAL FOUR GAME. I REMEMBER THAT TEAM VERY WELL. >> THAT WAS WHEN HE TOLD HIS TEAM, WHAT ARE YOU GUYS AFRAID OF LOSING BY 40 WHEN THEY WERE DOWN BY 22. >> THAT WAS CLASSIC.
