Island holiday home you’ll need to wait two years to stay at

Anyone who has visited Newquay should be familiar with the iconic landmark that is the house on the island.

Located atop a 70ft cliff, the breath-taking property – accessible only via footbridge – looks like a location from a James Bond film or fairy tale.

It has actually been visited by a number of famous faces, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the books that featured detective Sherlock Holmes.

The house was built in 1910, and has only been on the market three times in 40 years, most recently sold for over £1million.

Towan Island was first sold at auction to the Billing brothers in 1838, with the land later being used to keep chickens and for religious services.

The House in the sea is a property accessed across a suspension bridge on Towan beach

At the time you could only reach it via a pathway cut into the rock, with the suspension bridge linking it to the mainland being built in 1902.

The property was built eight years later, changing ownership a handful of times over the years, with one former resident being the inventor of the spark plug, scientist Sir Oliver Lodge.

Named house in the sea because it became surrounded by water at high tide, it was purchased by Lord and Lady Long, in 2001.

Lord Viscount Long was a government whip in the Lords from 1979 until 1997. He passed away aged 88 on June 13, 2017.

The couple bought the house for £500,000 but 11 years later, sold their home for an estimated £1million.
