Hallstatt is one of the best places to visit in Europe.

It’s surrounded by mountains and sits right on the edge of a lake.

Hallstatt is surrounded by mountains

Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its dramatic landscapes.

And to get a bird’s eye view of said landscape, head to the Welterbeblick skywalk.

The free-floating platform is suspended 360 metres above ground.

You’ll head up in a furnicular and take in breathtaking views of the surrounding areas.

For €36 you’ll also get to go on a guided tour of the salt mines below the mountain which are 7,000 years old.

TripAdvisor reviewers agreed that the salt mine tour was “great from start to end” and that the views from the platform were “breathtaking”.

Next, head down to Hallstatt lake for a relaxing afternoon.

Stroll along the banks, sit and take in the fresh air or take a boat trip across the water.

The namesake lake is breathtaking

“Beautiful, stunning lake, surrounded by majestic mountains and a charming village. Spend a few hours just relaxing by the lakeside,” said one traveller.

“Stunning, just stunning lake. Deep, clean and cold, surrounded by amazing mountains with shores sprinkled with small houses and villages. Probably one of the most calming, beautiful views one can globally find,” another gushed.

And don’t forget to have a wander around the streets of the village that have been dubbed “beautiful and traditional” by tourists.

For a midday snack, head to Taglich Frisch Gebacken for some sweet treats.

They serve “high quality, freshly baked Austrian sweets for little money” that visitors call “divine”.

For a more substantial meal, check out Braugasthof Am Hallstattersee.

It’s a traditional Austrian inn on the shores of the lake that offers “home-style Austrian cuisine with innovative ideas”.
