Hidden charges adding more than £1K to holiday costs for families
Hidden or unexpected charges are adding more than £1,000 to the cost of a holiday this summer, according to a new study. Research reveals a family of four could pay an extra £1,083 on top of their air fare and accommodation on items such as luggage fees, reserved seats, car parking, car hire extras and passport renewals.
As the cost-of-living crisis hits, the findings from Admiral Travel Insurance show that 32 per cent of UK holidaymakers are worried about the cost of travelling abroad. Whilst more than half of those polled say that hidden holiday costs are annoying but accept they are part of travelling abroad.
In a bid to discover the true cost of holidays, the insurer collected data from across the travel industry about a range of ‘hidden’ costs and found these could amount to £1,083 for a family of four. For a couple these costs could total £670, and a solo traveller could fork out £360 on these unexpected expenses.
A family of four could pay an average £252 on flight-related extras including hold luggage (£67), reserved seating (£78), infant charges (£44) and onboard snacks (£63). Added to this, holidaymakers driving to the airport can pay an extra £46 for a week’s parking if they opt for short stay parking at the airport rather than the cheaper off site airport parking.
The cost of airline add-ons annoys holidaymakers most. Other extra charges that cause travellers grief are are food and drinks on flights (13 per cent), followed by ATM or credit card charges (12 per cent), luggage costs (12 per cent) and reserved seats on airlines (12 per cent).
With only around a quarter saying they carefully research their holiday costs and create a detailed budget breakdown; the insurer is warning all holidaymakers to plan for hidden extras.
Cosmin Sarbu, head of travel at Admiral Insurance, said: “For many of us, this is the first summer that a week in the sun feels within reach for a couple of years, so it’s easy to forget just how much those hidden extras add to the overall cost of your holiday – over a thousand pounds for a family of four.

“The cost of things like seat upgrades and airport parking really bump up the price of going away, so that’s why it’s important to make sure you have travel cover before you go.”
Cash-saving guru Ricky Willis, aka SkintDad, added: “The thought of getting away for some summer sunshine with the family may sound relaxing, but with so many hidden holiday costs, it can make travelling financially stressful. The price of your holiday doesn’t start when your flight touches down, and extra costs such as travelling to the airport, eating before your flight, and even booking a seat, can make you feel like a holiday is well beyond the budget you first set.
“Instead of allowing these additional extras to put you off getting away, you can still travel on a budget and save up to £1,000 on charges with some simple planning.”
